What’s New at Mystic Mountain?

Friday, 20. January 2012 22:23

We can’t get enough of the natural beauty of the Great Smokies, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Pisgah. Maggie Valley and the surrounding area is a great place to call home, a second home. Mystic Mountain provides us and our guests with a special time to relax, explore, and connect with the natural world.

To make the time spent in between exploring as comfortable as possible Mark and I like to make regular updates to this wonderful mountain getaway. 2011 was a time for numerous updates. The year began with kitchen updates.

Then in the fall we brought an updated sofa into the living room. We find it a great place to sit back, relax, and reflect on our day. A comfy sofa makes a fire in the fireplace just a bit more cozy. Book a visit now and get to see the beauty and enjoy the comfort at Mystic Mountain.

Mystic Mountain Cabin Kitchen Solutions

Saturday, 12. February 2011 22:32

The Problem
When the original 28″ drop-in range bit the dust at our vacation rental, we discovered that the standard 30″ range would not fit in the 28″ opening left behind. That necessitated moving the existing cabinets or replacing them. Since in the original install the sink cabinet was not centered on the window and the sink was not centered in the cabinet, it definitely made sense to update the cabinets before replacing the tired almond colored laminate counters and installing a new free standing range. Creekside Old Kitchen

The Goals
Our goals were threefold: to refresh the kitchen and improve the footprint, to limit the amount of refuse going into the landfill, and to do all this within a limited budget.

The Solution
To the rescue came Jeana Burnette and the wonderful people at Jennings Builders Supply and Hardware. Jeana understood our desire to work within the existing footprint of our charming country kitchen and salvage whatever we could. Saving the upper oak cabinets which were still looking good was an obvious and easy step to take.

With Jeana’s help we decided to install oak lower cabinets for continuity. Then, we chose a painted finish that would work with the existing tile floor. The Medallion Oak Cabinets in the Seagrass finish were the perfect pick. Retrofitting the new cabinets into the existing footprint and on the recently installed tile floor required an expert carpenter. Jennings definitely had the right man for the job.

Jeana came up with an affordable option to link the upper oak stained cabinets with the lower painted oak cabinets. She suggested adding the wooden doorknobs stained to match the lowers on both upper and lowers. The uba tuba granite tied the entire project together.

We improved the footprint by moving the new energy efficient dishwasher from one side of the sink to the other. The change allows for two people to work in the kitchen now. Much more efficient.

A Few Good Guide Books

Friday, 12. February 2010 20:19

With limitless activities in Maggie Valley and the surrounding areas of Haywood County, the choices can overwhelm first time visitors. Repeat visitors also can use guidance in seeking out unique things to do in the area. A few good guide books certainly can help you make the most of vacation time. Wireless internet and a comfortable work area to plan your travels also contributes to a fun time in the Smokies.

Computer Work StationHiking Books

These are a sampling of the guide books that you will find at our vacation rental cabin, Mystic Mountain Cabin.

North Carolina’s Best Wildflowers Hikes by Kevin Adams has always been my favorite. The hikes provide a variety of options for the novice to the experienced hikers. Plus it is almost inevitable that the wildflower hikes will also include waterfalls, streams, old growth forests and the like. Organized by the months of the year, you can always find a wonderful hike but April is by far the best month of all in Maggie Valley.

Best Hikes of the Pisgah has several fun hikes. We did the Lovers’ Leap hike in Hot Springs and the Max Patch hike in Haywood County. Both of these hikes provide spectacular views- Lovers’ Leap of Hot Springs and the French Broad River and Max Patch of miles of multiple mountain ranges. The only caveat with this book – you need to double check on directions to the actual trail head.

You can’t go wrong with any of these books. Purchase them in advance of your trip or stay with us at Mystic Mountain Cabin and put them to work for you after you arrive.

Creekside Waterfall Loop

Saturday, 21. March 2009 20:36

Mark, the dedicated jogger in our home state of Florida, replaces jogging with ambitious hiking when we vacation in Maggie. He found this wonderful hike right off of Creekside Drive where Mystic Mountain Cabin is located.

Creekside Waterfall

The hike starts out at the driveway going up Creekside, this is a steep incline, up to Saddle. Once you take a right turn onto Saddle, the level of difficulty eases back. You can enjoy long range views of the valley along Johnathan Creek as you follow a dirt road through Killian Knob. As the trail winds back down to the lower elevation, you end up at a spot where a stream tumbles and rumbles down the mountainside. At the top of a wooden stairway that runs along the stream stands a great little deck with benches.Creekside Waterfall Creekside WaterfallWhen you continue on down past the stream, you arrive back at Country Club Drive which wraps you back to Riddle Cove Road and back to Creekside. This wonderful little loop takes a minimum of 45 minutes, longer if you explore the stream.

Hike to the Top of Killian Knob

Friday, 6. March 2009 18:44

Once you get into the Maggie Valley neighborhood of Creekside you need to go no further. The homes of Creekside sit in the holler or hollow of Killian Knob . Mystic Mountain Cabin located at an elevation of 3,300 feet provides a great starting point for hikes in, around, and to the top of the knob.

Let the Hike Begin

200 Creekside Drive

From the base of the driveway, you have several hikes to choose from. The most ambitious of these, the hike to the top, takes you from an elevation of 3,300 feet to 3,900 feet. Because of the elevation change the hike alternates between moderate and strenuous. The hike takes around 60 minutes. Since it originates from the house, if you are a novice hiker, you can gradually build up to completing the hike over a series of days. Or if you really aren’t a hiker, you can just hop in your car and drive the approximately half a mile to the top. It is paved most of the way. Whether you drive or walk, it is well worth the effort.
